Teachers tell their stories: Maria"To see one child's face light up as they grasp something new can make a whole day truly rewarding. "By Victoria Macdonald
To celebrate National Storytelling Week (30 January to 6 February), we asked teachers in Scotland to tell us about the good, the bad and the downright ugly of teaching. We'll show a different story every day. If you feel inspired to tell us yours, do so in the form at the end of this tale, or by clicking here. Marie* is a 27 year old from East Lothian who became a newly qualified Music Teacher in 2008. She took time off to have two little girls, having worked her first term in a secondary school, and now hopes to get back into teaching through Supply work so she can become fully qualified. Here's her story... My favourite teacher at school was Mr Gaston, Head of Music. He was hugely inspiring with an excellent approach to discipline, brilliant at his subject and had a touch of Irish humour. I became a music teacher because I love music and whilst I was studying to get my PGDE, I got involved in teaching inmates at the prison and put on big music projects with primary children. I saw how music can be such a powerful and good influence on people's lives and that's so exciting to share. To see one child's face light up as they grasp something new can make a whole day truly rewarding. I've been lucky not to have had any really negative experiences so far, though I'm sure I'll get my fair share. If I was to use one of Teacher Support Scotland's services, it would probably be their Online Support, where you can email someone when you're feeling under pressure and get advice and support. *Names have been changed to protect the teacher's privacy Teacher Support Scotland will be taking part in National Storytelling Week with different stories from teachers.
