The heat is onAdvice given for staying safe in the sun as the UK is issued with the first official heatwave warning of the summer.by Sally Baker : 30 June 2009
The heat is on this week as forecasters predict warm and humid weather throughout the UK and the Met office issues its first heatwave warnings of the summer. While sun lovers are rejoicing in the return of the great British summer, the UK's heatwave plan has been activated and official guidelines issued for staying safe in the sun. Across the UK this week will be hot and humid with parts of the UK seeing temperatures climb to highs of 30°C by day, but a key factor will be the night-time temperatures. Lows in some areas may not fall below 18°C. Official advice says anyone who can should stay indoors from noon to 3pm, draw curtains to shade rooms, drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen while outdoors. Many schools are already keeping children out of playgrounds during breaktimes so check to see what your school policy is and keep up to date with the advice. Officials are also encouraging people to check on neighbours, relatives and friends, especially those with mobility problems.
