Education Secretary Michael Gove revealed plans to change school leader training and powers in his speech at the National College's Annual Leadership Conference today. He said that he wanted more potential school leaders to acquire management qualifications, and declared his intention to secure more support for those who want to quickly climb the career ladder in teaching. His speech also suggested that he will:

  • Develop ‘a culture of professional development in teaching'
  • Reform teacher training ‘to shift trainee teachers out of college and into the classroom', and
  • Move resources ‘so that more heads can train teachers in their own schools'.

He also confirmed that he will abolish rules that limit school leaders' ability to observe teachers at work. We recently set up the ‘Lead by example' guide in memory of Headteacher Graham Hollows which can help you to effectively manage the changes and challenges of life as a school leader.
