TEACHERS’ ACHIEVEMENTS SHOULD BE CELEBRATED, SAYS TEACHER SUPPORT NETWORK

In response to the release of an Ofsted report and stories suggesting that teaching is ‘under-rated’ as a profession, Julian Stanley, Teacher Support Network Chief Executive, said:

“Teachers make a hugely significant contribution to society, but the profession is not held in anywhere near as much esteem as it deserves, as reflected in the underestimation of their financial value in the recent ICM survey results.

“At the same time, teachers are frequently held solely responsible for educational standards despite the existence of a multitude of factors that contribute to a child's ability to succeed.

“Whilst providing support to thousands of teachers every year, we have seen that the rapid pace of change in schools, including the implementation of new directives, can take a serious toll on both the wellbeing of teachers and their ability to teach effectively.

“Change in schools is often necessary in order to improve outcomes for young people, but any initiatives must be carefully considered and implemented in a manner that both protects the wellbeing of teachers and addresses the needs of the school community as a whole.

“In addition, teachers deserve to have the terrific contributions they make to the futures of their pupils recognised and valued, and this year we have initiated a public celebration to celebrate Great Teachers and the work that they do.”
