YOUNG BREED OF ‘STEPFORD HEADS’ THREATEN STAFF WELLBEING, DELEGATES TOLD
"NPQH did not do enough to train new heads"

By Lucy Rowe : 12 May 2009

Teacher Support Network have been quoted in a Times Education Supplement article about headteachers, and how they have “become school leaders before acquiring the skills and judgement needed to manage properly.”

Lesley Auger, an NUT national executive, was quoted as saying at the union’s conference in Cardiff, “in the past two years about half of primaries in Salford had got new heads, many of whom were causing problems.

“They are Stepford heads. They are coming with their [National Professional Qualification for Headship] and if they don’t know what to do, they reach for a policy.”

At the same fringe meeting Patrick Nash, Chief Executive of Teacher Support Network, was quoted as saying: “the NPQH did not do enough to train new heads to look after their staff’s wellbeing. You should not be able to become ahead until you have done that.”
