CAREER CHANGERS MUST BE SUPPORTED

11 April 2008
Commenting on the Teacher Training Agency survey of Newly Qualified Teachers, Patrick Nash, Chief Executive of Teacher Support Network said:

“It is good news that the teaching profession is attracting people from other workplaces as they bring a wealth of skills and experience to schools. However, these new teachers must be supported to ensure they do not return to their previous jobs disillusioned by the challenges of the classroom.

“Stress, pupil behaviour and workload were three of the top five issues raised by the 680 NQTs who called Teacher Support Line last year. “In order to retain teachers, it is vital that schools provide personal as well as professional support to NQTs in areas such as work/life balance and access to counselling and advice services.”
