Wordia in schools

By Joe Williams : 17 September 2009

Wordia.com, the 'video dictionary' is launching a new, dedicated schools version of their educational platform and is wanting to hear from teachers interested in find new ways to engage students with literacy, reading, writing and ICT.

You may have seen Teacher Support Network’s partnership with Wordia last week. On their site, we helped host a week of definitions relating to teaching and education. You can see them here.

Wordia is a traditional online textual dictionary that encourages users to explore their own personal meaning of a word, recorded on video, and contributed to the foundations of an authoritative textual dictionary. Anecdotal, reflective and insightful, Wordia allows anyone to express their thoughts and views on a word or subject. In an educational setting, this 'learning by doing' helps students to engage with literacy in a new way.

Wordia appeals by engaging the user
though interaction and entertainment, filming in styles and narratives - 365x Word of the Day videos per year - that young people relate to, such as rap, song or comedy makes Wordia more palatable than traditional dictionary resources.

Video adds an innovative new dimension to the dictionary, with each film becoming an
aide-memoire, helping the viewer to recognise when to use a word in
conversation/learn new vocabulary. A modern dictionary for a modern audience.

Wordia are launching a pilot programme and eager to hear from educators who are keen to use ICT to engage students with literacy, reading and writing.
