Subject leader

By Sally Baker and Lucy Rowe

A subject leader has specific responsibility for the management of a subject across a key stage or the whole school.

As a subject leader you will be expected to:

  • Lead the development of the subject within the school.

  • Keep up-to-date with developments in the subject at local and national level.

  • Lead the development and review of policies.

  • Lead the development of a scheme of work.

  • Have an informed knowledge of standards in their subject throughout the school.

  • Support staff in their teaching of the subject.

  • Audit resources within the subject.

  • Organise resource storage and upkeep.

  • Organise resource purchase and loan.

For further information on the roles and responsibilities of a subject leader visit the National Strategies website.

You should also be able to join an Association for your subject. This will keep you up-to-date in your subject, help you be part of your subject community, continue your own learning and give you access to dedicated sources of information.

Subject associations are normally membership organisations, often registered charities, whose mission is to further the teaching and learning of a specific subject in schools, colleges and universities. If you are interested in joining an association visit the Council for Subject Associations website.

Teachers Building Society has joined forces with the national charity for teachers, Teacher Support Network to offer you this unique savings account. Click here to find out more.
