Become a mentor

By Sally Baker and Lucy Rowe

The role of a mentor will usually relate to mentoring an NQT and will involve the following main areas of responsibility:

  • Provide personal, professional and pedagogical support for the NQT.
  • Co-ordinate the induction plan and induction activities in collaboration with the headteacher and the NQT.
  • Liaise with the headteacher in providing short updates at staff meetings on the induction of NQTs.
  • Liaise with other schools in the area for the purpose of observing and sharing practice.
  • Consult with the headteacher about CPD or release days (for mentors and NQTs).
  • Establish clear boundaries for the mentor-NQT relationship.
  • Familiarise NQT with school policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with the NQT in the classroom eg observing and giving feedback.
  • Accept and give feedback in a constructive, open and professional manner.
  • Engage in action planning with the NQT.
